On March 28, 2024, a rock paper scissors tournament was held at Central Regional High School.
This tournament allowed everyone to get involved, and play until there was only one winner.
The classic game, which has been played as far back as the year 1600, requires no skill at all. People of all ages can enjoy the game, and even though this tournament was held in a high school, it could be just as fun and successful in any school. It also doesn’t require any equipment, making it one of the most popular games of all time, as it is available anywhere.
For each round, after both players say the words, “rock, paper, scissors, shoot” they have a choice between the three options. This gives each player a one in three chance of winning, tying, or losing. Since ties don’t matter in a best of three series, both players have an equal fifty percent chance of winning. This factor gave every student a fair chance at becoming the champion.
At the start of the school day, everyone played rock paper scissors in an extended homeroom period, until one winner was declared for each homeroom class. The tournament continued throughout the day, as homeroom winners were called down to compete against each other. These homeroom champions played until only eight remained.
This “Elite Eight” part was live streamed during fourth period, for all students to watch. One at a time, there were one versus one matches, in a best of three series.
Ultimately, senior Jon Joshua Fidel Gapilango was victorious and became the Rock Paper Scissors Champion of Central Regional High School.
