As the season begins for the girls lacrosse team, we have been working really hard to make ourselves the best we can be. We are put in a really hard bracket this year and are not expecting anything to come easy. We started off our first two games playing two of the hardest teams in our bracket. In both games, we fought really hard and tied 4-4 at halftime. But unfortunately, we had not worked out all of our kinks yet and ended up losing.
While for most teams, this would make them want to give up, this wasn’t the case for us. We knew what we were capable of and wanted to reach our full potential. So as our third game came around, we were locked in and ready. We come out strong, really playing as a team, leaving everything out on the field. Again, it was all tied up 4-4. We have seen this in the last two games, and we couldn’t pull through. We did not want that feeling again. We were pumped up and ready to finish this game out with a win! Finally, after that long game, we came out with the win by just one point. It was such a fun game, and we were so proud of each other.
After each win, the coaches name one player who they think made the biggest impact on the game (aka what we call the GOAT of the game). And I think we could all agree that the person who got it was more than deserving. Our amazing goalie, Morgan Schinder. She worked so hard the whole game, saving shots left and right. Being a goalie is definitely the hardest and scariest position on the field, and she does it without complaining and with a smile always on her face. I was lucky enough to get a quick interview with her to share her opinion on the game.
Mia: How do you prepare yourself for each game?
Morgan: “For the lacey game, I had my airpods on the bus, listening to a variety of Taylor Swift songs, and during warm-ups, I focused on where people were shooting and my angles.”
Mia: What’s your favorite thing about being a goalie?”
Morgan: “At the end of the game, as soon as the buzzer goes off, I really love it when my entire team runs out onto the field and gives me some of the best group hugs I have ever gotten. I love the support I receive from my teammates after every game, win or lose, no matter how good or bad I did. My teammates are literally the best people ever.”
Mia: What’s something we need to improve on?
Morgan: “On defense, just getting to know where the cutters are and communicating more on offense, though I’m not there to watch, I feel like we need to take care of the ball and make smarter decisions when faced with panic.”
Mia: How do you think the game went overall?
Morgan: “Honestly, I was a little stressed pregame because I heard they had a really good player, and when I saw her take the draw for the first time, my heart sank. I knew she was a good shooter, and she would tend to shoot before the 8-meter line, which she did. But overall, our win was a team effort, from people on defense stepping up and scoring goals to the offense getting good looks, which results in goals.”
