The Central Regional Girls’ Basketball team had a little bit of a rocky start to their season this year. We started off the season 0-4. But this did not stop us from believing in ourselves.
We worked hard every day of our winter break leading up to the tournament (besides Christmas). While other teams took time off for the holidays, we pushed ourselves to get better and focused on our upcoming games.
Finally, the day of the WOBM Classic tournament came. Central was taking on Donovan Catholic. It was a close game, with the end of the first quarter tied up. But towards the end of the game, Central really started kicking it into gear, and we won our first game of the season.
Though we were happy, we still had work to get done. Our next game was against the winners of the other game, Lacey. We knew this game was going to take a lot of work, but we were prepared. The game was intense; with each basket we would score, they would go back and forth. We went into halftime winning, but we knew there was not going to be an easy win. Tensions were high, with several people fouling out, but once again, Central ended up pulling out with a win. The final score was 35–33.
This was the first time a girls basketball team has ever made it to a finals game in the WOBM Classic. We were so honored to make history, but our job was not easy. With the championship game so close, we had to keep our eye on the prize. With one game to go, the Central girls were pumped up and ready to take on the Toms River South. CR wasted no time with bucket after bucket. Central was winning going into halftime. Our heads were in the game, and we finally felt like all our hard work was paying off. Finally, after a hard-fought game, the Central Regional Girls’ Basketball team won 48-36. We got a trophy to add to the trophy case, and to celebrate our win, head coach Torsiello took us out to Applebee’s.
