Everyone’s favorite holiday is right around the corner! Thanksgiving!! No, not Christmas. Though most people just skip right over Thanksgiving to Christmas, Thanksgiving is an important part of our history. The first-ever Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, and unlike nowadays, it lasted 3 whole days! There were about 150 people who attended. That’s so hectic; imagine how many mashed potatoes they needed. They also didn’t have Turkey like we do nowadays. They just had seafood (sounds pretty expensive nowadays); but that sounds so good considering I love seafood.
When I think of Thanksgiving, I think of the Macy’s Day parade and football blaring on the TV, but they didn’t have any of that. The first football game on Thanksgiving didn’t happen until 1876. And the first Macy’s Day parade wasn’t until 1924. It doesn’t even compare to what it is today. They didn’t have a single balloon; it just had a bunch of zoo animals and floats, but that’s it. Per year, around 50 million people watch the parade, and 3.5 million people attend it in person.
The best way to end a good Thanksgiving Day is to take the wishbone with a friend or family member and break it in half. Whoever ends up with the bigger piece after it’s broken is said to have good luck for the rest of the year. This tradition dates back to the ancient Etruscans. I love the tradition and do it every year with my sister; unfortunately, my sister always ends up with the bigger piece. I think she has a strategy for it. Anyway, this year, I’m hoping to beat her.
